Pope Benedict XVI resignation. Astrology event chart and quick thoughts

Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation today. He is the first Pope to resign in 600 years. He has attributed his resignation to poor health.

“For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April, 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February, 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is,”

Here is the event chart for the intended date of his departure as head of the Catholic Church set for Vatican City, Italy:

Note the abundance of planets in Pisces, a classic sign of Christ energy.

The plethora of planets in the 6th house of this event chart indeed reflect the reason the Pope has given for his departure as being poor health.

Retrograde Mercury is in exact quincunx to the Libran moon at 17 Libra.

17 Libra is the position of Fixed star Seginus. Seginus with the Moon: “Preferment by indirect means followed by disgrace and ruin”. [Robson*, p.207.]

Neptune and Venus are conjunct in Pisces. Love and Sacrafice.

Jupiter, ruler of faith, religion and philosophy is in it’s home house  in the 9th house  trine the Ascendent of this event chart. Big day then in Vatican City.

Chiron is in conjunction with the Sun in Pisces. Jupiter, squares this Sun, Chiron conjunction.   Saturn in Scorpio trines this point.  This is certainly an expansive event, which will send waves through the Catholic Church for many years to come.

Uranus in Aries is opposite the Ascendent…ch ch ch changes,  conjunct the descendent – a radical change for the people.

Pluto in Capricorn is in the 4th house of the event chart “home”, roots and background – this squares the Vertex axis. Transformation of the home base and world by events seemingly beyond control.  A destined event. Big comings and goings.

There will be much more to glean from further examining this chart, these are just some initial thoughts.

In my Feb 17 post I wrote:

“I am also trepidly predicting the next pope, or a clear front runner who will become the next pope, will be announced by March 10, 2013.”

I am revising this prediction to say the annoucement of the new pope will occur as early as March 6th.

My Feb 17 post was actually posted Saturday night Feb 16, EST time (east coast of America).

Update: Today (Sunday, Febuary 17, 2013) on the CBS News show ‘Face The Nation’ Cardinal Donald Wuerl said “…we have to start actually gathering on the 1st of March”, i.e. the Vatican conclave will begin to convene Friday, March 1. As stated in the earlier post the Sun is positioned between 10Pis31 and 11Pis31 March 1, literally all day. This resonates with the Sabian symbol for 11-12 Pis.

Sabian symbol 11-12 Pis “In the sanctuary of an occult brotherhood, newly initiated members are being examined and their character tested.”

Semiotically “newly initiated members” may refer to relatively recently consecrated Cardinals.

During the event Hades (retrograde) is positioned at 00Can57:
Sabian symbol 0-1 Can “On a ship the sailors lower an old flag and raise a new one.”

It’s interesting how the Sabian symbols resonate with significance not once, but over and over again at different points of the event chart.

Hades at this position is conjunct the MC, the cusp of the 10th house. The 10th
house among other things represents the affairs of large organisations, and therefore in this context, the affairs of the catholic church (‘church ship’).

    Tuesday, wait it gets better!

As in your article and in the other posts ‘the event’ refers to the announced time and date of Pope Benedict’s resignation Feb 28, 2013, 8:00pm, CET, Vatican City.

    1. During the event, the location of Mars is 21Pis02, the Sabian symbol (rounded above) for that is 21-22 Pis “A prophet carrying tablets of the new law is walking down the slopes of Mount Sinai.” This is clearly a reference to the future pope.

    2. The location of Pluto is 11Cap07: Sabian symbol 10-11 Cap “A large group of pheasant on a private estate.” The Common Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) is native to Italy and throughout Europe. The head (of Phasianus colchicus)
is bottle green with a small crest and distinctive red wattle. In semiotic language, this could refer to the College of Cardinals (“large group of pheasant” — ‘birds’ with a red wattle!) on a “private estate” (i.e. Vatican City).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Pheasant

    3. The location of Neptune is 3Pis07: Sabian symbol 3-4 Pis “Heavy car traffic on a narrow isthmus linking two seashore resorts.” Again, semiotically this could refer to the passage of the current papal administration to the next. The maritime symbology being esoterically interpreted as a reference to the papacy.

    4. The position of the Arabic Part ‘Dismissal & Resignation’ is 8Aqu49:
Sabian symbol 9-10 Aqu “A man who had for a time become the embodiment of a popular ideal is made to realize that as a person he is not this ideal.” The could refer to Pope Benedict’s reason for his resignation aside from his health concerns.

    5. The Part of Fortune is located at 28Aqu11: Sabian symbol 28-29 Aqu “A butterfly emerging from a chrysalis.” This could refer to Pope Benedict free of the constraints (“chrysalis”) of his papal responsibilities. Take a look at this stunning (somewhat creepy) link concerning the death of John Paul II which I found after writing the above comment:
    http://www.theonion.com/articles/pope-emerges-from-chrysalis-a-beautiful-butterfly,1318/
In the context of the article the butterfly imagery could refer to Pope Benedict’s symbolic papal “death”.
Excerpt – “The butterfly has long been a Christian symbol of resurrection”:
    http://www.religionfacts.com/christianity/symbols/butterfly.htm

    6. The next Sabian symbol in the series is 29-30 Aqu “Deeply rooted in the past of a very ancient culture, a spiritual brotherhood in which many individual minds are merged into the glowing light of a unanimous consciousness is revealed to one who has emerged successfully from his metamorphosis.” This could refer to the initiation of the newly elected pope.

The Sun is positioned between 10Pis31 and 11Pis31 Friday, March 1, 2013, and the Moon will be between 28Aqu30 and 29Aqu30 Sunday, March 10, 2013 between the hours of 4:43am and 6:27am (CET, Vatican City).

It’s interesting to note the Sun is conjunct the Arabic Part ‘Intellectuality’ at 28Aqu40 on March 10, 2013, between 4:43am and 6:27am.

Sabian symbol 11-12 Pis “In the sanctuary of an occult brotherhood, newly initiated members are being examined and their character tested.”
I take this to mean the College of Cardinals will meet the week preceeding March 10 to consider possible successor candidates.

    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/europe/Conclave-electing-new-pope-could-start-before-March-15-Vatican/articleshow/18532757.cms

I am also trepidly predicting the next pope, or a clear front runner who will become the next pope, will be announced by March 10, 2013.

    7. The position of Poseidon (retrograde) during the event is 11Sco00: Sabian symbol 10-11 Sco “A drowning man is being rescued.” Pope Benedict feels overwhelmed (“drowning”) and therefore resigns (“being rescued”).
Excerpt – “He genuinely feels washed out”:
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/religion/the-pope/9875091/Benedict-XVI-resigns-the-reluctant-Pope-leaves-behind-a-Vatican-rocked-to-its-core.html

    8. Vulkanus (retrograde) is located at 26Can56 during the event: Sabian symbol 27-28 Can “An Indian girl introduces her white lover to her assembled tribe.” One can speculate the next pope may not be European or an outsider (outside the traditional avenues of succession) favored by Pope Benedict. 67 of the 117 cardinals were selected by Pope Benedict, indicating the likely successor
will be a staunch doctrinal traditionalist. It’s hard to imagine a european outsider palatable to the majority of cardinals, who is also a doctrinal traditionalist. So this militates in favor of the notion the next pope will be non-european.

The semiotics is of course speculative, but it is interesting nevertheless.

The Sabian symbols are listed here: http://oaks.nvg.org/sabsym.html

Correction: It’s interesting to note the Moon is conjunct the Arabic Part ‘Intellectuality’ at 28Aqu40 on March 10, 2013, between 4:43am and 6:27am.

      Correction: Vulkanus should be Vulcanus.

Some astrologers prefer the spelling ‘Vulkanus’.

Fabulous Sabian Symbol analysis Al – thank you very much. I would love to reproduce this as your article in a proper post – I had the great privilege to see Linda Hill: http://www.sabiansymbols.com/ many years ago and am so interested in the symbols that I use them in rectification work at times. Many thanks and I shall email you privately regarding turning your comments here into a proper post – I’m sure many people would be interested in what you have to say. Regards, T

It will be very interesting to follow this event through the time the next Pope is chosen. A chart for the start of the Conclave might give some insight.

The following excerpt illuminates this even more clearly:

“Ships in the Bible were originally not meant to be symbolic. Only under the influence of non-bilical, classical literature, did the early Christians re-interpret the ship and turn it into a symbol. The ship became – even before the cross – a symbol for the church and it’s goals, i.e. for healing and salvation. The Navicula Petri or Navicella Petri, the ship of salvation, was predominantly used in late antiquity and medieval theology.”

“Ships have also served for models for the church as a building. The word ‘nave’ is derived form the Latin ‘Navis Ecclesiae’ (= ‘church ship’),…”

Wow Al. I sometimes get the shivers (in a good way) with the intensity of the symbolism of things like this. I have not explored Pope Benedict’s natal chart, but will certainly make a point of having a look. I believe his Moon is 14 Libra and his Jupiter is 20 Pisces, less than a degree from where Mercury goes retrograde.

It’s interesting to note that the description of the Sabian symbol for 17Lib is “A retired sea captain watches ships entering and leaving the harbor.”

    • Al
      February 15, 2013

“The church, of course, has from earliest times been symbolised by the ship which navigates over the sea of the desire nature. Subjugation to the desire nature is a necessary condition of our human existence. Hence while Jesus walks on water, Peter sinks (Matthew 14:26-31).

In order then not to drown in the desires Peter needs a boat. And this has come to be associated with the church. Even the actual building carries a reference to this because the nave in a church derives from the Latin ‘navis’ (ship).”

Hi Al, thank you for pointing out the symbol. It is fascinating how well it seems to fit.
